WD My Passport Ultra has quite a bit of changes in design. The new hard drive has an extremely thin profile. Plus new pattern design has been embedded on the top. It has a better build quality than its previous versions.
The hard drive comes in 3 storage options that is 500GB, 1TB and 2TB. The 1TB model is priced at around ₹5,875 in India and $80 in USA. But is it worth it???
- Software – The hard drive gave sequential write speeds of 102.8MB/sec and read speeds of 103.2MB/sec on Blackmagic Disk Speed. The results were much better on CrystalDiskMark. The sequential read and write speeds were 109.1MB/sec and 107.8MB/sec respectively.
- Real World – In real world scenario, USB 3.0 write speeds from Mac to WD was 97.77MB/sec. In case of Windows 8.1 the USB 3.0 write speeds 105MB/sec. USB 2.0 write speeds on Mac was 29.86MB/sec whereas on Windows 8.1, it was 36.3MB/sec.
This hard drive can be easily formatted to Mac OS X Journaled format and can be used as backup with Time Machine support. For Windows WD Smartware software can be used for backup to drive or Dropbox.
This hard drive is one of the best in the market. It performs very well. The speeds are similar to other USB 3.0 hard drives. The best part is its slim profile. You can carry 2TB right in your pocket. I have used WD hard drives for over 3 years and not faced any issue. I will definitely recommend this one too.
