Let’s talk about Chinese companies especially Xiaomi (English Website, Indian Website). But why Xiaomi? It’s because, its a new Chinese company which has entered the Indian smartphone market but it is not just any Chinese company. We Indians, have been buying Chinese products since a long time and we have always censured their products for the poor build quality and short longevity. I have done this but finally there is one Chinese company which I like and that’s Xiaomi.
Xiaomi is around 3+ years old and has a value of $10+ Billion. They have a business model which is a replica of Apple. Though they don’t manufacture laptops and desktops, they do manufacture other products that Apple manufactures such as smartphones, tablets, set up box (Apple TV), etc. Moreover they are called as the Apple of China. No body gets a tag like that without doing something that mesmerises the people. Definitely Xiaomi must have done something extraordinary to be called Apple of China.
The entire supply, design and manufacturing is regulated by Xiaomi. This makes the product a lot more economical and helps in maintaining a high quality. Xiaomi also adds a touch of Apple in their keynotes as well as their products. They just don’t stop at that, they also provide the latest features and technology packed in the device at more than half the cost of other devices. That is something really incredible. Every time they launch a new product, they bring about a bunch of surprises. The recently launched MI Band (a health band) is being sold at approximately ₹790 ($13) and competitors are selling their health bands at a cost which is beyond most people’s budget.
The cost does not stop them from creating a product with absolute brilliant quality and build. I am personally using their products for more than a year. I actually asked someone to ship me the MI 2SC (a CDMA phone) and MI3. And guess what they did turn out to be absolutely top notch. An awesome phone with super awesome specifications (equivalent to flagships from Samsung, HTC, etc) at super duper low cost. Guess what their devices are manufactured by none other than Foxconn who are pioneers of iPhone and many other Apple devices.
Moreover the demand for their products is so high that, they have to conduct sales every week. I know many might say why not manufacture more products. Yes but there is always a risk in that and building up on the manufacturing process is a better option. Just today the MI3 went out of stock within 5 seconds on Flipkart. Xiaomi’s phone is creating a wide buzz in India and this will make other vendors to fine tune their prices a bit.
The finesse with which the products have been designed and created is just brilliant. MI3 is just the beginning, wait for some more cool devices such as the MI Tab, MI Band, MI4, Set Up Box, etc. And their specifications will entice you to buy it.
I am being too restrictive about the company. These are just the products that they manufacture. In china the Google Play Store cannot be loaded by default on the android devices because it is not regulated heavily like the Apple App Store. So Xiaomi have their own App store which is widely used in China (I think it’s ranked 2 in China). Just how we say, iOS devices are integrated, Xiaomi products have been well integrated with their cloud services and other softwares.
So don’t consider Xiaomi like any other Chinese company, it is a great company and expect some great surprises from the company.
